Getting ready for spring!
Fishn' With Joe
by Joe Jordan
Just this morning one of my closest fishing buddies called me up exclaiming "I just can't wait any longer until spring." I assured him as I looked outside at the bare trees and the brown grass that indeed Spring was here. After all how could I forget spring, I was born on the first day of the season and all my life in the ever changing climate that I call home, March 20th has signaled the end of snow and cold and the promise of warmer days to come. As he complained and moaned about cold, rain, snow and how miserable it was I offered to him a reprise from his depression in a question. "What have you done to get ready for the upcoming fishing season?"
Of course this question was followed by a long pause as I already knew the answer before it was asked and he sensed this but, not to be outdone he began to think about the answer he might fabricate which was really a list of what he should have been doing all along. I was really interested to hear what he had to say because in his quick wittedness I was sure he would come up with something to do that I hadn’t thought to do myself. He began his fictitious list of the things he accomplished as I took notes. "Well I greased the bearings on the boat trailer, cleaned the boat out, changed the line on all my reels, got my tackle boxes in order", and so on and so on until he mentioned he went out in the backyard and practiced casting. "Practiced casting?" I interjected. As if twenty years experience with a bait cast reel wasn’t enough. He responded "It’s been a long winter and I just wanted to knock the rust off" and this idea on his do list became the inspiration of an episode of Fishn’ with Joe Jordan. Heading out in the backyard or to a local park pond on a cold spring day may not put any fish in the live well now but, in another few weeks it may help keep the line out of the trees. Be sure to check out the new videos in the next coming weeks for casting tips and suggestions to help knock the winter rust off your casting. The last thing I want is for you to be tangled in tree limbs on your first day out on the water.
